A Minnesota 6-year-old was killed in a crash

A Twin Cities man has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for causing the death of a young child.

29-year-old Hakeem Muhammed was given a 252-month sentence with credit for the nearly one year he has been in jail since his arrest on criminal vehicular homicide and fleeing police charges. The Minneapolis man previously entered into a plea agreement and admitted to a felony count of fleeing police in exchange for the dismissal of criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation charges.

The criminal complaint says 6-year-old Blessings McLaurin-Grey was a passenger in a car that collided with a vehicle driven by Muhammed while he was fleeing from police in North Minneapolis at speeds approaching 95 mph on July 11 of last year. The little girl was rushed to North Memorial Hospital, where she died from her severe injuries. A 15-year-old girl in the same car suffered a traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding in the crash. A family member created a GoFundMe website to benefit the child’s parents in covering medical and funeral expenses.

The court document says the pursuit began in Brooklyn Center, where police received information that Muhammed had been spotted in the parking lot. He was wanted on an arrest warrant for a fatal shooting in Minneapolis and sped away when Brooklyn Center Police attempted to arrest him.
