Gravley’s investigation revealed more of what the two South Carolina men were allegedly up to while in Hillsville.
“One of my victims, she doesn’t even have a paved driveway, just a gravel drive. They told her they were going to pave her driveway,” Gravley said. “Their history, they are known for scamming folks. They claimed that day they were just passing through, asking, ‘Why are you messing with us? We’ve never been in this town before.’”
Gravley found at least two other incidents of the two attempting to scam folks, including the Sargeant’s own family.
“The funny part, I get home and my wife says some strange guy was ringing our doorbell and I forgot to tell you about it. I pulled up the video and it was these two guys knocking on my door two days before we arrested them, so they had been in town for a while,” Gravley said. “Another lady called me and she ran them off about a week before. She said she recently had her driveway paved, and she said these two guys showed up and told her they were there to finish the paving job on her driveway, and she said, ‘No, you are not the person I hired.’ They were out trying to scam people.”
