Moravia, N.Y. – A justice in Cayuga County has resigned while under investigation on allegations $6,000 was missing from the local courts, a state commission announced Tuesday.
June Shepardson, 62, a justice of both the Moravia Town and Village courts, resigned effective Aug. 31.
The state Commission on Judicial Conduct said Tuesday that it started an investigation on Aug. 2 after a representative of the state Unified Court System alleged Shephardson had “converted” more than $6,000 in court funds.
The commission agreed to drop its investigation if she agreed to not seek or accept any judicial position in the future.
Shephardson had been a justice since 2001, and her terms would have expired in 2025.
