Central Illinois Officials Address Election Concerns Amid New Law Allowing Driver’s Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants

URBANA, Ill. (WICS) — Ahead of the 2024 Presidential election, officials in Central Illinois are working to alleviate worries about election security.

Residents asked questions during a press conference Wednesday about whether non-citizens will be able to vote following a new state law that allows undocumented immigrants to get a driver’s license.

Tazewell County Clerk, John Ackerman, said local offices oversee elections, so there’s safeguards in place to make sure all information is verified before adding someone to the voter roll.

The only ones who can add your name, add your information to the voting rolls is the local office,” Ackerman explained. “So, we receive that information from the Secretary of State. We review to make sure that everything that is needed is all there and we add you to the vote rolls then if it is all there.

Ackerman also said clerk offices receive incomplete files, and they have to contact residents to determine if they are an eligible voter.

When a person registers to vote they must confirm if they are a United States citizen.

If a person is not, they could be charged and deported if claim they are U.S. citizen.
