Residents of one central Pennsylvania borough are being ordered to limit their nonessential water use after officials say the shortage of rain is affecting the borough’s water system.
The notice came out of Littlestown Borough, Adams County on Saturday and is in place until further notice, the borough manager says.
Two “critical” water sources in the borough are already unable to be used, contributing to the shortage.
“Due to the continued shortage of rain in our area, lowered stream flows and ground water levels are expected to continue to impact our community water system,” the notice said. “While water conservation is always encouraged, it is currently a necessity to protect our vital community asset.”
Here is a list of regular activities that are banned during the notice:
- Watering your lawn or garden
- Washing sidewalks, driveways or siding
- Filling pools or hot tubs
- Open burning
- Washing vehicles (except at a car wash that recycles water)
The borough also provided some ways to easily save on water:
- Run your dishwasher and washing machine less often and only when full
- Do not let your sink run when brushing your teeth or shaving
- Take shorter showers
- Set lawnmowers to cut grass at 2-3 inches. Longer grass helps keep shade out of the sun, helping with moisture retention
- Repair any household leaks
Residents in violation of the new water notice will be subject to fines and the termination of their water services.
