Two drivers were killed Wednesday in a head-on crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:50 p.m. in McCormick County, said Cpl. David Jones.
A 2008 Cadillac was driving south on S.C. 28, and near the intersection with Melrose Road it crossed the center line and hit a northbound 2022 Toyota Camry, according to Jones. Both drivers died at the scene, Jones said.
The McCormick County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the drivers. No other injuries were reported. There was no word if either driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Cadillac to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 1,015 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
Last year, 1,198 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least three people have died in McCormick County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, four deaths were reported in the county, according to DPS data.
